In a recent letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Chairman James Comer stated he is continuing his investigation into the unregulated and illicit vape products that are saturating U.S. markets. These products, he emphasized, originate primarily from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The letter underscores the urgency of the situation, citing the risks these products pose to American consumers, particularly young people.

Comer’s letter notes that despite an overall decline in youth vaping, teenagers are still consuming fruit-flavored disposable e-cigarettes. Alarmingly, the top three most popular brands among this demographic are all manufactured in China.
This situation presents a dual threat. Firstly, the lack of regulatory oversight and public health review means these illegal Chinese products endanger the safety of Americans. Secondly, their sale funnels substantial profits back to China, which Comer described as a matter of national security. “China’s involvement in the illegal sale of these products in U.S. markets is a matter of national security,” he wrote. “These illegal Chinese products lack regulatory and public health vetting, which not only jeopardizes the safety of Americans but also provides China with a significant source of funding.”

To advance the committee’s investigation, Chairman Comer has requested that the Department of Justice schedule a staff-level briefing. The deadline for this briefing is September 5, 2025, or as soon as possible.
